Hurricane Inez began as a bundle of clouds, formed in the Atlantic Ocean in October 1966. As it moved toward the Caribbean, it gained strength and became Tropical Depression Nine. It continued its course and became stronger, then formed into the ninth named storm of the season.
It passed over Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba, but not before reaching Category 4 status. Inez's unpredictable path led it towards Key West, where it destroyed a large frigate.
Inez reached peak intensity in the Gulf of Mexico shortly before making landfall in Mexico, and died shortly after landfall, killing nearly 1000 people. |
